Wet, wet, wet…

The Eurocup Mégane Trophy teams met for two more days of collective testing at Barcelona circuit. Ralph Meichtry (Race Performance) was in command during this first day of testing while today’s best registered lap was signed by Carlo Van Dam (Racing for Belgium).

“Our car livery will be similar to 2005, similar as when we won the first Eurocup Megane Trophy championship with Jan Haylen” said Wim Coekelbergs, Team Manager of Racing for Belgium, proud of Carlo Van Dam’s performance at the end of the morning session.

Van Dam, one of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 frontrunners, is delighted to stick in the World Series by Renault: “I’m happy to be linked to Renault still I will contest the German F3. This car is fantastic, easy to drive, and the best of all is that you don’t get wet!”

The Circuit was wet indeed, since yesterday’s afternoon. A strong rain irrupted in the Circuit but after this typical spring storm the track started to dry-up allowing the Swiss Ralph Meichtry to progress in a good form and put in an impressive lap, 1.53.142, leaving Matthieu Lahaye (Tech 1 Racing) and Bernard Ten Brinke (Equipe Verschuur) only 0.6 and 0.8 seconds behind him respectively.

Oregon Team is celebrating their 20 years in competition. Jerry Canevisio, its Team Manager, has recruited the former Italian Clio Cup champion in 2003 and 2004, Giusseppe Ciro.

The Junior driver Mike Verschuur, winner of the German Clio Cup, will be under his father’s rules in the Dutch Megane Trophy Team. Unfortunately, Mike crashed during the last session and his car could not regain the garage. Verschuur Sr. is confident about the new pit stop strategy: “I’m firmly convinced that the refuelling will made these races more spectacular. We will have to work in strategies and be smarter than the others!”

Boutsen Energy Racing is the solely team in which the cars will be shared. Yesterday, Renaud Kuppens confirmed that Horion Geoffroy will be also behind the wheel of car n10. The other car is shared between the Maxime’s Team: Maxime Soulet (a Belgian Formula Renault 1.6 Series refugee) and Maxime Martin.

Matthieu Lahaye (Tech 1 Racing) has been the best Junior driver during this test and he looks to renew his Title also in 2007. This morning he had a crash after the first chicane but the team worked well and he even completed some installation laps before the end of the morning’s session. Lahaye was the second quickest driver in Session 4, behind Dimitri Enjalbert.

Some drivers (Jean-Philippe Mandonia, Sebastien Dhouailly, Renaud Kuppens and Rafa Unzurrunzaga) decided not to take part in today’s last session as the rain stayed in the Catalan circuit…and some were forced to, like the Frenchman Matthieu Cheruy, whose engine box was broken.

The Teams are now packing with their minds set on the Series debut next 22nd of April in Zolder (Belgium).
