By taking the best time in both collective testing sessions, almost a second ahead of Maxime Martin (Boutsen Energy Racing), Dimitri Enjalbert (Tech 1 Racing) has given his rivals plenty to worry about. But some of his fellow title contenders will undoubtedly come back strongly tomorrow…
After a brilliant start
at Zolder,
where he earned two top-three finishes, Dimitri Enjalbert now looks
ready to notch up his first race win in the Eurocup Mégane
Trophy. The Parisian set the best time in both collective testing
sessions. "The day went perfectly," said Enjalbert. "My aim is to do
just as well tomorrow, so that I can start the races from pole
position, score a lot of points and move ahead of Pedro Petiz in the
championship! From my point of view, the Junior standings are more
important than the overall standings, even if the two seem to go
together now because the young drivers are so competitive."
In second place, 0.443 of a second behind Enjalbert, Maxime Martin was only marginally quicker than Pedro Petiz, who leads the overall standings. The Portuguese driver was not satisfied: "Something's not right with the car. It's been under-steering a lot since this morning. Matthieu Lahaye has had the same problem. We haven't managed to find the right setup. We'll compare our data with Dimitri's to see if we can find a solution."
Michaël Rossi and Carlo van Dam, who took the fourth and fifth-fastest times respectively, were no happier. The two Racing for Belgium drivers both experienced instability when braking. "Still, things are going better than at Zolder", said Carlo, looking at the bright side. "There I was hampered by brake trouble throughout the weekend. We thought that the problem today was to do with the differential, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The team will keep working to improve things."
With the second-fastest time of the morning and the sixth-fastest of the afternoon, Ralph Meichtry (Race Performance) is confident about his prospects this weekend: "I didn't make the most of my fresh tyres – I only took two tenths of a second off my time. But I know that the speed is there, I'm happy with the way the car is handling and I'm confident that I'll be in the running for a place at the front of the grid. The serious business starts tomorrow!"
Mike Verschuur and Bernhard Ten Brinke had a relatively disappointing time of things, finishing seventh and eleventh respectively. But the Verschuur team drivers are optimistic about their chances. Now Bernhard has had a taste of podium success, he just wants more!
Fabrice Walfisch was in the top ten, but feels that he has a lot of room for improvement. Plagued by brake and clutch trouble, the Team Lompech driver still has to work out how to make the most of his fresh tyres.
Things have been trickier for TDS and Oregon Team. Both the French and the Italians are trying to find a way of shaving valuable seconds off their times. One thing is for sure: Ludovic Badey (12th), Matthieu Cheruy (13th), Giuseppe Ciro (14th) and Diego Romanini (16th) are not where they should be!
After crashing off this morning, Jean-Philippe Madonia (TDS) could only take part in the second session. But everything will be back in order in time for tomorrow morning.
